Peer Tutoring (a silver lining to remote instruction)

9/1/2020

With our shift to remote instruction, a real silver lining has been a change in the way we can offer peer tutoring. I have recruited undergraduates to be peer tutors on the instructional team for years. They help with some administrative tasks, help to run exam viewing sessions, and offer peer tutoring. The peer tutoring was never really practical face-to-face. They didn't have a space to offer it. It was awkward.
Enter Zoom and remote instruction - ta dah! - now they have a space to meet and everyone is OK with remote meetings.
Canvas Calendar completes the silver lining, providing an easy way for peer tutors to offer 1-on-1 tutoring appointments and for students to sign up for them.

The nuts and bolts:
Canvas Calendar has an appointment group option. Choose the time frame and choose the appointment length and Canvas will make appointments available to students to sign up.

Students then use the Find Appointments link on the calendar and select their tutoring time.

Giving extra credit in Canvas

Extra credit refers to points that are not required. They benefit the students who complete them but do not hurt the students who do not complete them. There are a number of ways of adding extra credit to student grades in Canvas.

Option 1. Extra credit on existing assignments.
This is a very easy way to grant extra credit. If an assignment is worth 10 points and you want to give an extra credit point, you can simply enter 11 points for the students who earned the extra credit.

Option 2. Create an extra credit assignments.
Create an assignment worth 0 points.
Enter the students earned extra credit as the score. As the denominator is 0, any points will be extra.

Option 3: Extra credit weighted category.
If you are using weighted categories, you can add an extra credit category and set it to be worth x% of the course grade. This will display your course as out of (100% + x%) 10x%. Then add extra credit assignments, worth points and enter the students earned points. If a student does not earn points for an assignment, be sure to enter that as 0.
Caveat – set the extra credit category to be worth 0% until there are graded assignments in all of the other categories. If you do not have graded assignments in the other categories then this category will act like part of the regular grade and will negatively affect the grades of students who have not completed it.

Translations: English to Canvas (Part 2: Quiz)

Some questions (and answers) that I hear about Canvas quizzing
How do I...
  1. ... not include a quiz in the grade book? When you are editing that quiz, chose Quiz Type: Ungraded Survey
  2. ... show students the quiz questions, incorrect responses, and points as soon as they have submitted their responses? When you are editing that quiz, check the box 'Let students see their responses'. There is no way to separate out these three pieces of information. The only additional option is whether or not they see the correct answer.
  3. ... change the answer on a question - I need to re-key something? It really sucks to be you. There is no easy way to do this. You will need to go through every student submission and adjust the scores manually.

Here are some common questions I hear regarding Canvas grading
How do I...
  1. ... add a column to gradebook? Go to Assignments: + Assignment
  2. ... not accept late assignments? Go to Assignments: Available Until and set the date
  3. ... enter ‘0’ for missed assignments? Go to Grade book. For each assignment column, click on the down arrow for an assignment column (the full menu can take a while to load). Choose Set Default Grade. Enter '0'. Do not override.
It is really important to keep this up to date so that the students have an accurate grade.
  4. ... excuse a student from an assignment? Go to Grade book. Type the letters EX in the cell for that student for that assignment.
  5. ... drop an assignment? Go to the list of assignments. In one group of assignments, click the three dots to the right and choose Edit. Set to ignore 1 of lowest score. IMPORTANT - be sure that all of the assignments in that group are out of equal points. Canvas drops based on points, not on percentages.
  6. ... set grade cutoffs? Go to Settings. Choose 'Enable grading scheme'
  7. ... override a final grade? You can't. Sad face. We do this after Canvas has passed the grades to the registrar's office.
